The call always sounds the same: the website shows an error and the company email has stopped. In most cases the domain simply expired — and in most cases it can still be saved. What decides the outcome is which stage of the expiry cycle the name is in today.

Stage 1 — Grace period: fix it today

For roughly the first thirty days after expiry, a .com is usually renewable at the normal price. The website and email are down, but nothing is lost. This is the cheapest and easiest moment to act, and the one most often wasted arguing about who was supposed to renew it.

Stage 2 — Redemption: expensive but possible

After the grace period the name enters redemption, typically for another thirty days. It can still be restored, but the registry adds a restoration fee that dwarfs the annual price. Get the exact figure in writing before authorising anyone to proceed.

Stage 3 — Pending delete and the drop

Next comes a short pending-delete window, after which the name is released to the public. Names with any traffic or backlinks are caught within seconds by automated catching services, and then resold. A backorder placed before the drop is the only realistic way to compete.

    If someone already has it

Two honest options remain: negotiate a purchase, quietly and without revealing that the buyer is the original owner, or rely on a registered trademark if you hold one. Neither is guaranteed. Anyone promising certain recovery is selling you hope.

    Restore the email first

When we recover a name, mail routing comes before the website. A day of a down website costs you visitors; a day of down email costs you invoices, purchase orders and the trust of clients who think you ignored them.

    • Renew or restore, then rebuild MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC
    • Move the registrar account to a company email that outlives employees
    • Turn on auto-renew and put every domain on one calendar

    The practical takeaway

Inside the grace period, recovery is a normal renewal. In redemption it is expensive. After the drop it is a negotiation. Speed is the only variable you control — check the status the day the site goes down.

    Frequently asked questions

Can an expired .com domain be recovered?

Usually yes during the grace and redemption periods that follow expiry; after that the name may be released or auctioned. Our recovery service fee is 250 SAR plus registry charges.
